Councillor Tedjo, Chair called the meeting to order at 6:00PM.

Councillor Tedjo, Chair recited the Indigenous Land Statement.

E. Warsh spoke to the subject matter summarizing collision trends from 2015 - 2023, road surface conditions, and ambient lighting.

A. Legrain spoke to collisions and trends regarding injuries and fatalities, and the proactive safety program.

Committee Members engaged in discussion and inquired about the following:

  • Differences between city-owned and region-owned roads
  • Impact of LED lights
  • Injuries associated with turning movements
  • Impaired and distracted driving
  • Data related to near-misses
  • Infrastructure safety
  • Data from hospitals
  • Resident vs. non-resident incidences
  • Shared roads
  • Data preceding 2015

Matthew Sweet, Manager, Active Transportation, E. Warsh, and A. Legrain responded to inquiries with information and noted proactive efforts to improve safety and a future report back on efforts.

Committee Members commented on the initiative's helpfulness, noting actions such as assisting someone with loading their bicycle onto a bus makes a significant impact.

Councillor Fonseca inquired about collaborating with Tourism Mississauga for 2025 and M. Sweet noted staff will look into engaging with Tourism Mississauga for the outreach program.

Jansher Saeed, Resident spoke to the collision trends in Mississauga, expressing concern for cyclist and pedestrian safety.  Further, J. Saeed spoke to cycling infrastructure opportunities, provincial legislation, and the impacts of cycling on climate and business growth.

Councillor Tedjo commented on investing in cycling infrastructure and noted that the upcoming cycling master plan is considering various options.

Natalie Halff, Resident commented on the impact of Bill 212 (Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act, 2024 – Building Highways Faster Act, 2024) on the City's commitment to vision zero and whether the Committee can encourage Council to advocate to the province on behalf of residents and the cycling community.

Committee Members engaged in discussion regarding the impact of provincial legislation on cycling infrastructure and Councillor Tedjo noted that a letter would be sent to the Province.
