Councillor Damerla, Co-Chair called the meeting to order at 6:47 PM.

Councillor Damerla, Co-Chair recited the Indigenous Land Statement.

That the September 11, 2024 Combating Racism, Discrimination and Hatred Advisory Committee Agenda be approved.

That the May 15, 2024 Combating Racism, Discrimination and Hatred Advisory Committee minutes, be approved as presented.

John Dunlop, Manager, Indigenous Relations, Heritage and Museums spoke to the subject matter highlighting terminology, Indigenous Relations at the City, engagement, awareness, Indigenous place making, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

Committee Members inquired and commented on Indigenous healthcare, representation at the municipal level, economic development, data on Indigenous demographics, impact on outreach, and archaeological sites in Mississauga; J. Dunlop and Becky LaForme, Coordinator, Indigenous Relations responded.

Rob Trewartha, Director, Strategic Communications and Initiatives spoke to developing a City campaign to promote unity, address discrimination, racism, and hate; and proposed that a subcommittee be formed to shape the campaign.

Committee Members engaged in discussion, commenting and inquiring about the Peel Regional Police campaign on hate, the necessity of an educational campaign, ensuring sensitivity around communication on current issues; and R. Trewartha and Uzma Shakir, Strategic Leader, Diversity and Inclusion, provided comments.

Committee Members interested in participating in the Subcommittee to discuss the Mississauga for All Campaign were advised to contact the Legislative Coordinator.

Councillor Tedjo thanked Pamela Gunn, Citizen Member for their contributions as Co-Chair, commented on the Committee's work, and suggested amending the Committee's Terms of Reference to allow two Members of Council to serve as Co-Chairs.

Committee Members and staff engaged in discussion regarding the Co-Chairs composition, noting the importance of incorporating citizen member perspectives to foster parity between Members of Council and the community, and further deliberated by proposing multiple motions regarding the Co-Chairs composition.

    2. That Councillor Martin Reid be appointed as Co-Chair of the Combating Racism, Discrimination and Hatred Advisory Committee for the term ending November 2026 or until a successor is appointed.
