Kay Matthews, Executive Director, Ontario BIAA and Amber Pajtasz, General Manager, Streetsville BIA, regarding the Ontario Business Improvement Area Associations BIA Conference - 2024 in Mississauga

Ms. Matthews and Ms. Pajtasz presented and spoke to the subject matter. Members of the General Committee spoke in support of the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association and their work. In response to Councillor Reid, Ms. Matthews spoke to the criteria for establishing a Business Improvement Area (BIA). Councillor Kovac spoke to considerations for a BIA in Ward 4 in the future. In response to Councillor Fonseca, Ms. Pajtasz and Ms. Matthews spoke to active transportation opportunities for the conference. Councillor Fonseca spoke to updating the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee. Councillor Dasko spoke to using the new anthem in recognition of Mississauga's 50th anniversary.

Shelley Scott-England, Chair, Black Caucus Alliance (BCA) and Robert Trewartha, Director, Strategic Communications and Initiatives regarding the City's plans for Black History Month

Ms. England and Mr. Trewartha spoke to the subject matter and spoke to the background information regarding previous celebrations of Black History month. In response to Councillor Reid, Ms. England and Mr. Trewartha spoke to communications tools and strategies. Members of General Committee spoke in support of the initiatives and celebrations. Ms. England spoke to the upcoming "Black Excellence Awards" evening and requested support from Council for nominations.

Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee Report 1 - 2024 - dated January 31, 2024 (CONSENT)

  1. That the warrants have not been met for the placement of a school crossing guard on Lolita Gardens opposite the park path for the students attending Silver Creek Public School and Metropolitan Andrei Catholic Elementary School.
  2. That Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee be requested to re-inspect Lolita Gardens opposite the park path once the nearby construction is completed and the new apartment building is occupied.

MATTERS PERTAINING TO REGION OF PEEL COUNCIL

Acting Mayor Horneck spoke to Council procedures at the Region. Councillor Damerla spoke to an upcoming motion with respect to asylum seekers as well as the recent request made to the province regarding Mississauga’s vacant seat at Regional Council. In response to Councillor Reid, Acting Mayor Horneck spoke to city representation at the Auto Theft Summit and an upcoming communication on the matter. Councillors Parrish, Mahoney and Fonseca spoke in support of the summit and to future updates on the subject matter.

COUNCILLORS' ENQUIRIES

In response to Councillor Damerla's enquiry with respect to facility booking for advanced dates, Jodi Robillos, Commissioner, Community Services spoke to the allocation policy and the requirement to serve Mississauga groups first. Ms. Robillos spoke to working offline with Councillor Damerla to review specific examples. In response to Councillor Damerla, Geoff Wright, Commissioner, Transportation and Works spoke to providing comments from the development and construction teams regarding Mattamy's concerns with Metrolinx in preparation for the meeting at the Region of Peel.

OTHER BUSINESS/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Acting Mayor Horneck and Members of the General Committee spoke to various events and celebrations taking place in Mississauga.
