Chair, requested everyone present at the meeting introduce themselves.

“We acknowledge the lands which constitute the present-day City of Mississauga as being part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee Confederacy the Huron-Wendat and Wyandotte Nations. We recognize these peoples and their ancestors as peoples who inhabited these lands since time immemorial. The City of Mississauga is home to many global Indigenous Peoples.


As a municipality, the City of Mississauga is actively working towards reconciliation by confronting our past and our present, providing space for Indigenous peoples within their territory, to recognize and uphold their Treaty Rights and to support Indigenous Peoples. We formally recognize the Anishinaabe origins of our name and continue to make Mississauga a safe space for all Indigenous peoples.”

The 2024 Future Directions Plans for Community Services was presented by City staff from various departments across Community Services and addressed recommendations to enhance inclusivity and accessibility, increase awareness and communication on accessibility in the community, library, parks, fire stations, culture and recreation. 

The deputants provided the Committee information about various recommendations that would increase accessibility including:

  • low cost programming and support for low income residents;
  • reviewing gaps in service delivery;
  • monitoring capacity and use of recreation spaces to ensure they are aligned for equity deserving groups;
  • enhancement of parks to reduce barriers and increase accessibility;
  • flexible spaces in libraries, furniture, pop up libraries and technology;
  • awareness of cultural events and spaces to support the arts, culture and heritage experiences and reducing barriers to participation in cultural events; and
  • renovations at various fire stations that would increase accessibility and the vulnerable persons' registry.

Committee members inquired about pop up libraries in older condominium buildings, types of computers loaned out at library and their accessible features, library apps and partnership with CNIB, the vulnerable persons' registry, and facilitating encouragement and support for people with disabilities to remain active.

Accessibility Staff will provide a brief verbal update with respect to the Accessibility For Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

Councillor Mahoney, Carol-Ann Chafe, Vice-Chair and Mary Daniel, Citizen Member and Members of the Region of Peel Accessibility Advisory Committee will provide a brief verbal update.

Mary Daniel, Citizen Member advised the Committee that the question regarding the continuation of TransHelp would be discussed at the Region's next meeting.

Councillor Mahoney, Ward 8 advised the Committee that there would be lot to discuss in regard to the dissolution of the Region of Peel and that facilitators have been appointed, however main services would remain such as waste water treatment, the Peel Police and TransHelp.

Carol-Ann Chafe, Chair advised that the Region of Peel Accessibility planning would be looking at electric vehicle charging stations and digital compliance.

Dan Sadler, Supervisor Accessibility advised the Committee that the Facility Accessibility Design Guideline would be completed as a draft later this year for review prior to going to Council.

Mary Daniel, Chair of the Promotional Awareness Subcommittee provided the Committee with an update on the planning of the 20 year celebration of the Accessibility Advisory Committee.

Carol-Ann Chafe, Chair addressed additional comments that were in the chat with responses from staff regarding the deputation on the 2024 Future Directions Plan for Community Services.
