Councillor Tedjo, Chair called the meeting to order at 6:33 PM.

Councillor Tedjo, Chair cited the Indigenous Land Statement.

Moaz Ahmad, Citizen Member declared a conflict of interest regarding Item 6.1 Adaptive & Inclusive Micro-mobility (AIM) and Item 6.2 Micro-mobility Program Development - Phase 2

That the May 23, 2023 Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee Minutes be approved.

Carol-Ann Chafe, Founder & Chair, Access 2 Accessibility and Mary Daniel, Business
Development & Community Engagement, Access 2 Accessibility spoke about Adaptive & Inclusive Micro-mobility (AIM).

Councillor Fonseca enquired about the survey link and invited Ms. Chafe and Ms. Daniel to participate in community rides. Councillor Fonseca spoke about the Midweek Cycling Club Community and other opportunities. Ms. Chafe will forward the link to be shared with the Committee.

Councillor Tedjo clarified a previous ruling regarding Moaz Ahmad, Citizen Member Conflict of Interest Declaration and noted that he is able to participate in the general discussion.  Mr Ahmad thanked Councillor Tedjo for the clarification. 

Councillor Tedjo requested that staff share the community rides list with the deputants.

Moaz Ahmad, Citizen Member spoke to the importance of adaptive and inclusive micro-mobility and shared a personal experience.

Mattea Turco, Transportation Planner spoke to the Micro-mobility Program Development -
Phase 2.

Members of the Committee engaged in discussion and enquired about:

  • the differentiate between e-bikes and e-scooters on park trails
  • bench-marking of other municipalities regarding implementation of program(s)
  • speed restrictions
  • municipality, provincial restrictions and regulations
  • how motorized vs. non-motorized are distinguished/regulated
  • if mobility assist devices are permitted on trails 
  • charge requirements
  • safety requirements (helmets)

Ms. Turco and Matthew Sweet, Manager, Active Transportation responded to the enquires from the Committee.

Councillor Fonseca spoke to the Luso Charities event that takes place on July 16, 2023 at the Portuguese Cultural Centre.

Councillor Fonseca requested that the Tour de Mississauga discussion be placed on future Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee agendas to discuss other opportunities for events, future options and initiatives. Matthew Sweet, Manager, Active Transportation responded to Councillor Fonseca's enquiry.

Councillor Tedjo spoke to the Bloor Street Project and enquired if staff could provide a presentation on Vision Zero at the next meeting. Sam Rogers, Director, Infrastructure & Engineering Services and Mr. Sweet responded that staff will provide a presentation at the next meeting.

Councillor Tedjo enquired about discarded bikes at Miway and enquired if they could be re-purposed for the community. Mr. Sweet responded to Councillor Tedjo's enquiry.

Bill Johnston, Citizen Member spoke about a kids program regarding discarded bikes that the City of Toronto ran that worked well. 

Ryan Donik, Citizen Member suggested that the funds from the Tour de Mississauga could be allocated towards a discarded bike initiatives and/or programs.
