Ms. Suzuki-Bracewell and Ms. Babazadeh-Oleghi presented and provided an overview on upcoming events for the 2021 Earth Days. They noted the proposed programs, community and internal partnerships, a social media campaign, the 20 Minute Maker and a variety of virtual events.  Earth Days will take place from April 13th - 23rd, 2021.

Members of Committee raised questions regarding outdoor events and the associated COVID health and safety protocols as well as tree planting and specimen collection.

Diane Gibson, Waste Management Assistant

Ms. Gibson presented and provided an overview on the results of the Dog Waste In-Ground Containers. She addressed the issue of contamination stemming from incorrectly placed dog waste in park recycling bins. The pilot project began in January 2018 and has had continued success.  Ms. Gibson noted benchmarking with other municipalities, collection audits, public feedback and the overall highlights. 

Members of the Committee applauded the pilot project and the increasing public uptake.  Councillor Dasko inquired if additional dog waste receptacles would be rolled-out especially along the waterfront trail. 

Ms. Gibson and Gavin Longmuir, Manager of Parks responded that additional units will be installed and the locations are to be determined during further consultation with the Leadership Team and Council. They further noted that not every park will have a dog waste container due to the collection process and the large machinery utilized to service the units.

Pursuant to Section 42 of the Council Procedure By-law 0139-2013, as amended:

Environmental Action Committee may grant permission to a member of the public to ask a question of Environmental Action Committee, with the following provisions:

  1. Questions shall be submitted to the Clerk at least 24 hours prior to the meeting;
  2. A person is limited to two (2) questions and must pertain specific item on the current agenda and the speaker will state which item the question is related to;
  3. The total public question period time is 15 minutes maximum and shall not be extended by the Chair; and
  4. Any response not provided at the meeting will be provided in the format of written response.

Highway 413

Councillor Mahoney spoke to the proposed Highway 413 and noted that Council unanimously objected to the highway at the February 24, 2021 Special Council meeting. He further noted that at Regional Council, the item was referred to staff to report back with more information including environmental concerns. Councillor Mahoney noted that the Committee Members could submit their comments online regarding the proposed highway and requested that the Legislative Coordinator provide the EAC Members with webpage to submit their comments.

Direction to staff was given to provide the Members of EAC with the webpage link to submit comments pertaining to the proposed Highway 413.

Brad Butt, Community Group Representative (non-voting member) noted that the Mississauga Board of Trade as not taken a position on the matter and that a few affiliated organizations are in support of the highway. Chelsea Dalton, Citizen Member brought forward a motion opposing the proposed highway.

 

Greenhouses

Alice Casselman, Community Group Representative noted the need for an increase of greenhouses within the City of Mississauga. Ms. Casselman suggested creating greenhouses on school property; such as high schools and post secondary institutions. Chelsea Dalton, Citizen Member responded by noting that University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) currently has two greenhouses on campus, however these facilities are not open to the public as one is a research lab and not always staffed to allow for public access.

Members of the Committee further noted using under-utilized spaces to create greenhouses, urban agriculture, native seed planting, plant adoptions and other grass root initiatives. Dianne Zimmerman, Manager of Environment noted that the launch of the Urban Agriculture Strategy in April as well as further exploring greenhouses, grass roots efforts and public engagement.
