Chair requested that everyone present at the meeting introduced themselves. 

“We acknowledge the lands which constitute the present-day City of Mississauga as being part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee Confederacy the Huron-Wendat and Wyandotte Nations. We recognize these peoples and their ancestors as peoples who inhabited these lands since time immemorial. The City of Mississauga is home to many global Indigenous Peoples.


As a municipality, the City of Mississauga is actively working towards reconciliation by confronting our past and our present, providing space for Indigenous peoples within their territory, to recognize and uphold their Treaty Rights and to support Indigenous Peoples. We formally recognize the Anishinaabe origins of our name and continue to make Mississauga a safe space for all Indigenous peoples.”

  • Alana Tyers, Manager, Service Department to present on the Enhanced Bus Shelter Design

Alice Ho, Manager, Service Department presented to the Subcommittee the Enhanced Bus Shelter Designs.

The Subcommittee commented on the following items:

  • wheelchair turning radius;
  • location of doors within the shelter, potential for sliding doors in larger shelters and location of door opening buttons;
  • concern regarding access for electronic wheelchairs and the ability to get into the shelter;
  • public awareness around accessibility needs in relation to bus shelters and protection for those in wheelchairs;
  • staff awareness of accessibility concerns both on and off the bus;
  • bus map requiring colour contrast; larger font; digital signage with electronic audio announcement, and concern re height of the map location;
  • the importance of colour contrasting for both concrete to shelter and window decals;
  • adjustable arms on the seating to facilitate all heights;
  • protecting priority seating through fines and means of alerting public of priority seating;
  • heating for all bus shelters and communication of this to the public;
  • maintenance concerns regarding bus shelters

Alana Tyers, Manager Service Department responded to the Subcommittee concerns as follows:

  • sliding door tracks often get blocked from salt and debris;
  • staff are noting concerns from the Subcommittee for this initial design phase;
  • education would be continued for operators;
  • staff would continue to fine ways to improve priority seating;
  • maintenance is conducted weekly with staff reviewing stations and noting concerns and issues which would be relayed back to staff;
  • the public can call 311 to report repair concerns;
  • communications staff will share with customers through social media, website, etc., once design is finalized and when changes would be implemented

  • Memorandum by Janette Campbell, Accessibility Specialist addressing the use of braille on the signage for the renovations to Tobias Mason Park Washroom

Janette Campbell, Accessibility Specialist provided the Subcommittee with an update on the exterior signage on the Tobias Mason Park Washroom renovations and advised the Subcommittee that all new signage on universal washrooms would be consistent with the use of contrast, font and braille at the bottom.  Ms. Campbell further advised that the signage was passed by Council.

Subcommittee members further discussed the use of braille and ways to improve signage as well as cleanliness concerns.
