"We acknowledge the lands which constitute the present-day City of Mississauga as being part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee Confederacy the Huron-Wendat and Wyandotte Nations. We recognize these peoples and their ancestors as peoples who inhabited these lands since time immemorial. The City of Mississauga is home to many global Indigenous Peoples.

As a municipality, the City of Mississauga is actively working towards reconciliation by confronting our past and our present, providing space for Indigenous peoples within their territory, to recognize and uphold their Treaty Rights and to support Indigenous Peoples. We formally recognize the Anishinaabe origins of our name and continue to make Mississauga a safe space for all Indigenous peoples."

Councillor C. Fonseca recited the Indigenous Land Statement.

Megan Piercey, Legislative Coordinator noted that Mr. Giggs requested that his deputation (Item 7.1) be deferred to the June 14, 2022 Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee meeting.

Councillor C. Fonseca noted the following amendment to Item 10.3:

  • Larry Lindsay, Citizen Member requested an update on closing the gap on Derry Road. Neal Smith, Project Manager, Region of Peel responded and spoke to major capital projects that would need to be completed before the project on Derry Road could begin. Mr. Smith further advised that he would provide an update to the committee once he received more details on the project status.

Neal Smith, Project Manager, Region of Peel advised that he would provide an update on Derry Road during Other Business.

This Item was deferred to the June 14, 2022 Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee meeting during the approval of the agenda.

Mr. Mehta and Ms. Lowe provided an overview of their work with Mississauga Cycles and the GLE Movement to connect newcomers with their new community, by bike and to provide free bikes and bike locks to the greater Malton community. Mr. Mehta and Ms. Lowe spoke to the demand for bikes and the need for more bike storage to expand their programs and noted that they had spoken to staff regarding the potential for bike storage containers at the Malton and Meadowvale Community Centres. Committee Members engaged in discussion and enquired about partnerships, funding and storage solutions. Mr. Mehta and Ms. Lowe responded to questions.

    1. That the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee supports Mississauga Cycling and the GLE Movement with respect to expanding their bike repair programs to address the need for two additional bike storage containers locations, as it aligns with the City of Mississauga's Cycling Strategy.
    2. That staff report back with options to address the need for additional bike storage containers and explore the feasibility of installing bike storage containers at the Malton and Meadowvale Community Centres.

Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee may grant permission to a member of the public to ask a question of Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee, with the following provisions:

  1. Questions may be submitted to the Clerk at least 24 hours prior to the meeting;
  2. A person is limited to two (2) questions and must pertain specific item on the current agenda and the speaker will state which item the question is related to;
  3. The total public question period time is 15 minutes maximum and shall not be extended by the Chair; and
  4. Any response not provided at the meeting will be provided in the format of a written response.

Mr. Hammel provided an update on the Network and Technical Subcommittee and spoke to vision zero, community rides and open data. Councillor C. Fonseca and enquired about sponsorship for a community ride at lakeview. Mattea Turco, Active Transportation Coordinator advised the Councillor to send her the request and responded to questions.

Ms. Turco spoke to the community ride partnered with Carassaua on May 28th and noted that there will be staggered groups of 25 or more are spaced out 20-30 mins so that people can spend about 20 at each pavilion before they move on. Ms. Turco advised that the Carassauga team was interested in attending the next Mississauga Cycling Committee meeting. Kris Hammel, Citizen Member spoke to the upcoming marshal training on May 18th.

Neal Smith, Project Manager, Region of Peel provided an update on the Derry Road project and spoke to major capital wastewater projects programmed for 2029 and noted that since this project is a coordinated project, the Region must wait for the wastewater project to be completed to begin. Mr. Smith advised that he would continue to update the committee as he receives further information.

Amy Parker, Active Transportation Technologist provided an update on the bike parking program and spoke to the focus on libraries and major recreation facilities. Ms. Parker further spoke to staff developing a strategic plan for new biking racks, and to retrofit old bike racks. Committee Members engaged in discussion and enquired about sheltered bike parking, 311 requests, school board outreach, and theft. Ms. Parker responded to questions.

Larry Lindsay, Citizen Member requested an update on Micro-Mobility at the next Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee meeting.
