Councillor Tedjo, Chair called the meeting to order at 6:03 PM

Councillor Tedjo, Chair recited the Indigenous Land Statement.

That the March 19, 2024 Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee Agenda be approved as presented.

That the February 13, 2024 Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee minutes be approved.

Rory O’Sullivan, Capital Project Manager, Rapid Transit spoke to the Hazel McCallion Line cycling infrastructure and facilities.

Committee Members engaged in discussion and inquired about the following topics:

  • Bicycle track width
  • Project construction timeline
  • Cycling connection to the 407 bus terminal 
  • Derry Road and Hurontario Street intersection
  • Derry Road: Red light traffic signal for vehicles; and cycle track and sidewalk navigation for those with visual impairments
  • Port Credit GO Station bicycle storage area

Lin Rogers, Manager, Rapid Transit noted that as a partner in the Hazel McCallion Line Project, the City of Mississauga currently has no timelines for cycling infrastructure completion.  Ms. Rogers noted that once details become available by the contract owner, Metrolinx, around timelines of the cycling infrastructure completion, an update can be provided to the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee.

Moaz Ahmad, Citizen Member spoke to the intersection at Derry Road and Hurontario Street expressing concern over cyclist and pedestrian safety noting that large trucks travel through Edwards Boulevard and Topflight Drive.  Direction was given to Active Transportation staff to review cycling connectivity options for the City of Mississauga and report back to the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee.

Fred Sandoval, Coordinator, Active Transportation summarized the quarterly Cycling Program update.

Committee Members engaged in discussion regarding public information sessions, Argentia Road bicycle lanes, and adding (where applicable) links to projects listed in the Cycling Program update, including photos or renderings. 

Active Transportation staff noted project website links will be added to the next Cycling Program update to the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee.

Rahul Mehta, Resident spoke to item 7.1 and expressed concerns regarding project completion timelines, and commented on adjacent cycling infrastructure and electronic bike counters. 

Mr. Mehta spoke to item 7.2 discussing the bicycle network completion, achieving the current Cycling Master Plan, and including regular updates on infrastructure built.

Mr. Mehta spoke to item 10.4 suggesting opportunities to include public input and best practices into the Work Plan for the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee.

Paul Marshall, Resident inquired why better bike route signage haven't been proposed for residential streets and parks in Ward 3 (related to item 7.2).

Fred Sandoval, Coordinator, Active Transportation responded that a number of routes are marked as signed routes and identified in the 2018 Cycling Master Plan; and further, the Cycling Master Plan update will focus on signage enhancements.

Jonathan Giggs, Resident, asked why the three new Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee awards weren't included during the 2023 Phil Green Award nomination period (related to item 11.1). 

Councillor Tedjo responded that due to timing issues, the three new awards and 2024 Phil Green Award would be promoted throughout the current cycling season.

Committee Members engaged in discussion related to the BIA Conference attendance and representation from the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee.

Direction was provided to Active Transportation staff to inquire with other City staff about offering complimentary or reduced rates for Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee Members interested in attending the BIA conference.

Moaz Ahmad, Citizen Member inquired about the bicycle lane design on Confederation Parkway in relation to the Hazel McCallion LRT. 

Jeremy Blair, Manager, Transportation Infrastructure Management, noted the options available for the City of Mississauga regarding the bicycle design and noted the City is aware of the constraints on Confederation Parkway.

Direction was given to Active Transportation staff to provide a summary of the Confederation Parkway bicycle lane analysis for the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee.
