Michael Hoy, Supervisor, Environmental Planning, City of Brampton presented on Centre for Community Energy Transformation.

Members of the Committee encouraged collaboration with other environmental networks.  Melanie Kramer, Community Group Representative advised of SNAP (Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program) opportunities in Mississauga that would tie into green structure and provide opportunities to change the landscape to support energy transmission.

Alice Casselman, Community Group Representative inquired about carbon offsets and requested to see more focus on the green infrastructure and planting of trees.

Diane Zimmerman, Manager of Environment advised that the City of Mississauga is actively working on reducing emissions and noted that 99% of green house gases come from the community.

    That the associated presentation and deputation from Michael Hoy, Supervisor, Environmental Planning, City of Brampton regarding Centre for Community Energy Transformation, be received.

Merissa Nudelman, Local Food Manager and Monica Bianco, Community Food Systems Coordinator of Ecosource presented on Deep Roots Case Studies in Strengthening Neighbourhood Food Systems through Community Gardening.

Members of the Committee discussed using the Deep Roots case study as a model to expand food banks and engage the community in growing their own food and inquired into potential sites for future community gardens. 

Ms. Nudelman advised Members of the Committee that they are open to discussing new ideas and working closely with the food bank partners. They further noted that Ecosource has a corporate engagement program that will be revamped in 2022 and that currently Iceland Arena’s teaching garden site holds majority of corporate engagements.

Teresa Chan, Climate Change Supervisor presented on District Energy in Mississauga’s Downtown.

Councillor Dasko inquired whether staff are liaising on the Lakeview project as they develop a plan for district energy.Ms. Chan responded that staff are discussing incorporating district energy into the  Lakeview project and reviewing other Municipalities’ models.

Chelsea Dalton, Citizen Member noted that the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus operates off a district energy model.

Ms. Chan noted the analysis would include an evaluation of co-benefits and energy loss over transmission.

Alice Casselman, Community Group Representative and Mr. Brown presented on the MiDon Pilot Project.

Members of the Committee discussed the gaming platform and public engagement with regards to education on ecological matters and asked to see an illustration of the actual game.

Mr. Brown advised Committee Members that phase two would include an illustration. He noted that the technology has yet to be implemented in the asset management system.  Mr. Brown further noted that they are waiting on regulatory changes with regard to open data to create this augmented data experience.

    That the associated presentation and deputation from Alice Casselman, Environmental Action Committee Member, Founding President of Association for Canadian Educational Resources and Jonathan Brown regarding the MiDon Pilot Project, be received.

Will Le, Aydin Neykov, and Noel Hand of the Port Credit Sea Scouts presented on their project on the Small Arms Inspection Building.

Councillor Dasko commended the team for the extensive work that has gone into the Small Arms Inspection Building.

Members of the Committee discussed the efficiency of the use of solar panels on a green roof and discussed concerns regarding weight requirements.

Jennifer Taves, Community Group Representative suggested a white or blue roof as an alternative, which would provide the same storm water benefits and heat without the weight load.

    That the associated presentation and deputation by Will Le, Aydin Neykov and Noel Hand of the Port Credit Sea Scouts regarding Preserving Our Past with Future Solutions be received

Aidan Rando, Michelle Kowalczyk and Racquel Pate, University of Toronto Graduates presented on sustainable transportation.

Members of the Committee discussed the challenges with the connect-ability within the City, such as connecting cul-de-sacs that are not on a grid system , and end of route connections to another transportation hub.  Members of the Committee acknowledged that the LRT will facilitate connection. 

Racquel Pate, University of Toronto Graduate noted they have benchmarked with other countries and their systems, however the study centralized on a Canadian perspective.
