Allyson D'Ovidio, Legislative Coordinator, called the meeting to order at 9:40 AM.

Members of the Road Safety Committee, staff and Agency Representatives introduced themselves.

Allyson D'Ovidio, Legislative Coordinator called for nominations for the Chair of the Road Safety Committee for the term ending November 14, 2026. Councillor Kovac nominated Councillor Dasko for Chair. Councillor Dasko accepted the nomination.

    That Councillor Stephen Dasko (Ward 1) be appointed Chair of the Road Safety Committee for the term ending November 14, 2026 or until a successor is appointed.

Councillor Dasko called for nominations of the Vice-Chair for a term ending November 14, 2026. Councillor Dasko nominated Councillor McFadden for Vice-Chair. Councillor McFadden accepted the nomination.

Allyson D'Ovidio, Legislative Coordinator provided the Committee Members with an overview of the Council Procedure By-Law, policies and meeting procedures. 

Members of the Committee engaged in a discussion with respect to the meeting format. Members agreed to hold meetings in a hybrid format where possible.

    1. That Road Safety Committee meetings take place in a hybrid format.
    2. That if hybrid meetings are not feasible, the committee shall hold in person meetings until a hybrid option becomes available.
    3. That the committee allow for fully virtual meetings at the call of the chair or by recommendation of the committee.

Allyson D'Ovidio, Legislative Coordinator provided an overview of the Road Safety Committee (RSC) Terms of Reference and requested the Committee review it and provide feedback to be incorporated into a draft. 

Councillor McFadden spoke to adding school board trustees as agency representatives to sit on the Committee. Councillor Kovac spoke to bringing this matter to the Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee (MSTSAC) at their next meeting for discussion.

Councillor Dasko spoke to promotional materials that were developed during the last term of Council.

Ms. D'Ovidio was directed to email the Committee with a deadline for submissions related to the Terms of Reference update.

    That the email from Matthew Aymar, Analyst, Research and Policy, Built Environment, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention, Public Health, Region of Peel regarding Peel Public Health Road Safety Update dated May 29, 2023, be received.

Colin Patterson, Manager, Traffic Services & Road Safety spoke to the design and purpose of the "Please Slow Down" lawn signs. Councillor Dasko directed staff to bring this matter forward to the Road Safety Committee for review. Members of the Committee engaged in a discussion with respect to reconstituting the Road Safety Promotional Subcommittee to address promotional items and projects. 

Robert Fluney, Citizen Member enquired about the role of the School Boards with respect to distributing the lawn signs. David King, Citizen Member spoke to possible new slogans such as "what is the hurry"? Brant Thompson, Citizen Member spoke to considering a pilot program to engage schools in sign distribution. Councillor Kovac spoke to partnering with the School Boards.  

Members of the Committee engaged in a discussion with respect to sign distribution, costs and location. Councillor Dasko directed Allyson D'Ovidio, Legislative Coordinator to email the Peel Public School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board to enquire if they would be interested in collaborating on the "Please Slow Down" lawn signs.

Laura Zeglen, Vision Zero Program Lead, spoke to an upcoming presentation on Vision Zero and slow down signs being one of the many works that are being done.

Councillor Dasko spoke to previous discussions about a Road Safety Mascot and would like to bring this matter back at a future meeting.
