“We acknowledge the lands which constitute the present-day City of Mississauga as being part of the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee Confederacy the Huron-Wendat and Wyandotte Nations. We recognize these peoples and their ancestors as peoples who inhabited these lands since time immemorial. The City of Mississauga is home to many global Indigenous Peoples.

As a municipality, the City of Mississauga is actively working towards reconciliation by confronting our past and our present, providing space for Indigenous peoples within their territory, to recognize and uphold their Treaty Rights and to support Indigenous Peoples. We formally recognize the Anishinaabe origins of our name and continue to make Mississauga a safe space for all Indigenous peoples.”

  • Kathi Ross, Senior Project Manager, Park Development to present

Councillor Dasko commended the design concepts and advised the Committee that the Legion would be contacted for their feedback on the design.

Committee members discussed the following aspects of the design concepts:
•     accessibility;
•     lighting;
•     benches;
•     slope
•     height of the cenotaph;
•     planting along the fence line to separate the cenotaph from development;
•     access points to the cenotaph that flow with entry and exit points;
•     provision of 3D images of the design concepts; and
•     the importance of eliminating hard lines around the cenotaph to reflect the connection
     of heaven and earth.

Kathi Ross, Senior Project Manager, Parks Development advised the Committee that the ramp is AODA compliant and negotiable for both wheelchairs and strollers.  Ms. Ross further informed the Committee that there could be the potential to marry design concepts 1 and 3 and that the Committee feedback would be taken back to staff for consideration.

John Dunlop, Manager Heritage Planning and Indigenous Relations advised the Committee that a heritage permit would not be required for the project and that the Heritage by-law is specific to the cenotaph itself.  Mr. Dunlop informed the Committee that staff would prepare a detailed design based on the feedback received and bring the design concept back to the Committee for further consideration before construction starts in the fall.
