Laura Zeglen, Vision Zero Program Lead, provided an update regarding the School Streets Program and School Walking Routes.

Natalie Halff, Resident, enquired about Item 9.11 and the process for determining safe gaps and warrants for a crossing guard.

Peter Westbrook, Chair, provided information on the site inspection and indicated that the requirements are listed online.

Colin Patterson, Manager, Traffic Services & Road Safety spoke to the matter and provided the technical background on determining safe gaps and the process which allows for warrants of a crossing guard. 

Councillor Brad Butt suggested that the resident attend a site inspection to see how these are calculated.

Site Inspection report for the site inspection conducted on September 13, 2022 at the intersection of Sheridan Park Drive and Fifth Line West for the students attending Sheridan Park Public School.


RECOMMENDATION

  1. That the warrants have not been met for the placement of a school crossing guard at the intersection Sheridan Park Drive and Fifth Line West for the students attending Sheridan Park Public School.
  2. That Transportation and Works be requested to re-paint zebra markings on the West and South legs of the intersection of Sheridan Park Drive and Fifth Line West.

RECOMMENDATION

  1. That the observed student crossing numbers and lack of safe gaps in traffic warrant the implementation of a school crossing guard. However, due to the current four lane cross section, posted speed limit, and observed operating speeds on Central Parkway, a crossing guard cannot be safely implemented without adequate protection in the form of a stopping control. 
  2. That Transportation and Works be requested to create a 30km/hr school zone on Central Parkway West between Joan Drive and Omeath Court for students attending Elm Drive Public School.
  3. That Transportation and Works review the feasibility of implementing a full signal at the intersection of the East Leg of Achill Crescent and Central Parkway West for students attending Elm Drive Public School.

Whereas; the Dr. Arthur Wood Safety Award was established in 2005 in conjunction with the Mississauga Traffic Safety Council 50th Anniversary celebration;

And whereas; this annual award was established to honour the late Dr. Arthur Wood who was instrumental in the establishment of the Mississauga Traffic Safety Council;


Now therefore be it resolved that; The Dr. Arthur Wood Safety Award is presented annually to a person who meets the following criteria:

Nominees can be: 

  1. A Traffic Safety Council citizen volunteer or Traffic Safety Council staff member appointee, City of Mississauga staff member, Police Officer, Civilian or School Board staff member.
  2. Nominations are accepted for a person who has dedicated his/her time and effort to children's safety in school zones or for the design/implementation of school zone safety programs.
  3. The Traffic Safety Council Public Information Subcommittee is appointed as the Nominating Committee to request, review and recommend nominations annually.
  4. The nominations will be ratified at the May Traffic Safety Council meeting each year to be approved by Council in June each year when the Award will be presented to the recipient along with other Traffic Safety Council Awards.

T. Coulson, Citizen Member nominated Robert Crocker, Peel District School Board Trustee for the award. T. Coulson spoke to the reasoning behind her nomination indicating that R. Crocker is a very active member of the committee, is well respected within the community and that he adds value to the committee.

Councillor B. Butt expressed support and stated that R. Crocker has been an outstanding member of the Traffic Safety Council.
